After winning the toss England elected to bat first at the flat wicket, and also England brought three changes as Zak Crawely replacing injured Rory Burns, Olli Pope and Dom Bess replacing Jonny Bairstow and Jofra Archer respectively.
But new opening pair could not be able to start the things well as Crawely edged Vernon Philander to De Cock for the first break through. Then however Sibley and Joe Denly tried to steady the innings and also negotiated the new ball threat.
Then came Rabada to take his first wicket of innings by removing Sibley for 34, however Root having a good record on South Africa gave a promising start for his 35 but was made unsettled by Anrich Nortje edging to Van der Dussen but dropped, Root did not made his chance and fell to Nortje’s bouncer after two balls.
Joe Denly who fought hard from start bowled by Mahraj then Ben Stokes and Olli Pope looked promising and confident but Stokes found himself did not get going.
After Stokes departed Jos Buttler played some glorious shots but the medium pace of Pretorious does the trick to remove Buttler. And soon Sam Curran saw his stumps flying at his back.
And soon after taking new ball Philander picked his second wicket, then Broad was removed by a toe crushing yorker from Rabada, but Pope played his shots to reach to his second fifty and ended the day with unbeaten 56*.
